Southern Vietnam

A resort city, and who it is actually for

Six kilometres of city beach backed by hotel towers, with the clearest water on the mainland coast and a diving and island-hopping scene that works.

Orientation

What Nha Trang is

Nha Trang is a proper city with a six-kilometre beach in front of it, and it has been developed hard: a wall of hotel towers along the seafront, a large Russian and Korean visitor economy, and an amusement park on an island reached by cable car. If you want a quiet, characterful Vietnamese beach town, this is not it and nobody should pretend otherwise.

What it does well is water. The sea here is clearer than anywhere else on the mainland coast, the diving is the best on the mainland, the island boats are cheap and fun, and there is an excellent municipal beach that is maintained and swimmable. Add a Cham temple complex over a thousand years old in the middle of town, and you have two or three solid nights, especially for families.

What to do

What to do

  • Po Nagar Cham towers — eighth to eleventh century, still an active place of worship, and the single most interesting thing in the city. Go early.
  • An island boat day — three or four stops, snorkelling, lunch on board. Cheap, cheerful and genuinely good from February to August.
  • Diving off Hon Mun — the best on the mainland coast, with proper operators and reasonable visibility in the calm months.
  • The mud baths, which sound like a gimmick and are a genuinely pleasant two hours, especially with children.
  • The seafood streets one block back from the beachfront, where the prices are a third of the promenade and the fish is better.

Timing

The season is the opposite of the rest of the coast

Nha Trang sits in a rain shadow and its wet season runs from October to December, exactly when the south is drying out and the centre is being hit by storms. February to August is dry, hot and the sea is warm and clear. This is genuinely useful for planning: in June and July, when central Vietnam is at its hottest and the north is at its wettest, Nha Trang is at its best.

Honest advice

Should it be in your trip at all?

If you have fourteen nights for Vietnam and this is your first visit, we would usually leave Nha Trang out — Hoi An gives you a beach and a great deal more besides, and the days are better spent in the north. If you are diving, travelling with children who want a proper beach day, or coming in June or July when the rest of the coast is difficult, it earns its place easily.

There is also a quieter version: the bays north and south of the city, where a handful of resorts sit on their own stretches of sand with the city forty minutes away. If you want the water without the towers, that is the answer, and it costs more.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Nha Trang worth visiting?

For diving, islands and a reliable beach in the middle months of the year, yes. As a cultural stop on a first Vietnam trip, it is the one we most often cut.

When is the sea best?

February to August. October to December is the local wet season, which runs opposite to most of the coast.

Is it good for families?

Yes — the beach is maintained and swimmable, the island boats and mud baths work for most ages, and the amusement park island is either a treat or a trial depending on your children.

Nha Trang or Quy Nhon?

Quy Nhon for a quieter coast with better beaches and far fewer people. Nha Trang for diving, islands and anything that needs a city behind it.
