Day trip from Saigon

Further out, where the canals narrow

Two and a half hours from the city, the delta gets smaller in scale and quieter. The day is built around a hand-rowed sampan on the canals of An Binh island.

Overview

Why the extra hour of driving is worth it

Distance filters visitors. At My Tho you share the river with several hundred people; at Cai Be the number drops sharply, and on the back canals of An Binh island, across the river from Vinh Long town, there are days when ours is the only foreign boat. The canals are narrow enough that the sampan brushes the palms, and a bridge made of a single trunk crosses overhead every few hundred metres.

The cost is a long day with five hours in the vehicle, which is why we treat it as a trip for people who have already decided they want the delta rather than a taste of it. The Cai Be floating market, once the reason to come, is now small and mostly finished by the time anyone from Saigon arrives, and we do not dress it up as more than that.

How the day runs

Day 1

Saigon to Cai Be, An Binh island and back

Sampan through An Binh’s narrowest canals

07:00 — collection from your lobby. Two and a half hours south and west on the expressway and the delta highway, with a coffee stop. Your guide uses the drive to explain how the Mekong splits into its branches and why the province you are heading into grows so much fruit.

09:30 — Cai Be. A walk along the riverfront past the tall French-era church and the market, then onto our boat. We pass the few trading boats still at the old market spot, then head downstream to the Mang Thit river, where brick and pottery kilns shaped like beehives line the bank. Several are still fired; many are falling in.

11:30 — An Binh island. We change into sampans, four people and one rower in each, and go slowly through the small canals. The rowers are local, and the pace is theirs. 12:30 — lunch in a family house on the canal: fish from the pond, a clay-pot dish, greens from the garden, and fruit picked that morning.

14:00 — a short walk on the island lanes, past longan and rambutan gardens, then the boat back to the vehicle. 15:00 — departure for Saigon. 17:30 — at your hotel, give or take the evening traffic.

Price

Price

OptionPer person (USD)
Shared, maximum 12from 69
Private, 2 peoplefrom 130
Private, 4 peoplefrom 90
Per person in US dollars. Shared price is per seat on the set departure; private prices include your own vehicle and guide. Children under 12 pay 70%.

The price reflects a longer vehicle day and hand-rowed boats, which cost more than an engine. A private day lets you stay later on the island or add a cycle ride, and for a party of four is only moderately more per person.

Practical

Photographs, water levels and the sun

This is the delta day photographers ask for. The light is best on the water in the late morning when the canals are in shade and the palms are lit from above; the kilns are good at any hour. A wide lens is more use than a long one in the sampan. From September to December the canals are highest and the sampan can go almost anywhere. In the dry months we choose the deeper channels and time the sampan section around the tide.

Sitting in a sampan

You sit low, on a plank or a cushion, for about forty minutes. It is stable, but it is not a chair. Anyone with bad knees or hips should tell us, and we will use a slightly larger boat with proper seats.

Not for everyone

Who this does not suit

Five hours of road in a day is too much for some people, and we would rather you knew it now. If you have only one free day and also want to see Saigon, the My Tho and Ben Tre day is shorter. If An Binh appeals, the better way to do it is the two-day homestay, which lets you wake up on the canal. Travellers who want a floating market at full trade should sleep in Can Tho instead.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the Cai Be floating market still worth seeing?

Not as a reason to come. A handful of boats still trade there, and we pass them, but the real market is at Cai Rang near Can Tho at dawn.

Who rows the sampans?

Women and men from An Binh who have rowed these canals all their lives. They are paid by the trip, not by tips, though a tip is welcome.

Can we stay the night instead?

Yes — our two-day homestay on An Binh follows the same route and adds an evening and a morning on the canal.
