Limestone karsts rise above emerald water with cruise boats anchored below in Ha Long Bay.

Northern Vietnam

One night on Ha Long Bay, done properly

An overnight on the bay is about twenty hours on the water. The whole plan is built around protecting the best of them: late afternoon, dusk and first light.

Overview

What one night really gives you

Every overnight cruise on Ha Long follows roughly the same clock: board at midday, a stop in the afternoon, dinner, a night at anchor, a short outing in the morning and back on the pier before lunch. The difference between a good trip and a tired one is the boat, where it anchors, and whether its afternoon stop happens before or after the crowd.

We book from a short list of smaller boats we have been on, with fewer cabins and itineraries that keep to the less busy channels. The car and driver from Hanoi come from our long-standing partner there. We will also tell you plainly that the second night on the bay is the better one, and if you have the time the three-day cruise on this site is the trip we would rather sell you.

Day by day

Day by day

Day 1

Hanoi to the harbour, and the afternoon on the water

Pick-up at your Hanoi hotel at 08:00 in a private car. The expressway makes the drive two and a half to three hours, with one stop. You board at around 12:00, lunch is served as the boat clears the harbour, and within an hour the islands close in around you.

The afternoon stop is either a cave — the big chambers are lit and busy — or a kayaking session among the islands, depending on the route. We choose boats that do these later in the afternoon, when most day boats are heading back to port. That is the hour this trip is named for: the light drops, the water calms and the bay goes quiet.

Sunset on the top deck, a cooking demonstration that you can take or leave, dinner, and a night at anchor. The generators hum on most boats; smaller ones are quieter.

Day 2

First light, a short outing and the road back

The optional tai chi session on deck starts at around 06:15 and is gentle. Coffee, a light breakfast, then a short outing — a smaller cave, a beach or a floating village by rowing boat — before a brunch as the boat sails back.

You are ashore by about 10:30 to 11:00 and your car is waiting. Back at your Hanoi hotel by roughly 14:30, or dropped at Noi Bai airport, which is on the way, for an afternoon flight.

The boat is most of the cost. The table above uses a sound, smaller boat with a window cabin; the higher tiers mean newer boats with larger cabins and balconies. Weekends and public holidays carry supplements set by the boat owners, and single travellers pay close to the price of a whole cabin.

Practical

Weather, cancellations and the boat question

October to December and March to May are the settled windows. January and February are cold, around 12 to 18 degrees, and often misty, which some travellers love and others do not. July to September is typhoon season, and the authorities close the bay to overnight boats when a storm approaches, sometimes with only a few hours’ notice. When that happens nothing sails. We tell you the boat’s cancellation terms before you book, and in those months we hold a fallback of a night in Ninh Binh.

Ask us about the anchorage

Most boats spend the night in a small number of permitted anchorage areas. Some boats have permits for quieter spots than others. That matters more than the star rating on the brochure.

Not for everyone

Who this does not suit

If you want solitude, one night on Ha Long will not deliver it — Lan Ha is the better bay for that, and our Lan Ha overnight is the trip to look at. Anyone badly prone to seasickness should know that anchored boats are usually calm but the transfer tenders are not always. And if only one night in the whole of the north can go to the coast, consider whether Ninh Binh on dry land would serve you better; a hurried single night here is the northern disappointment we hear about most often.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is one night on Ha Long Bay worth it?

Yes, if you choose a smaller boat and understand that it is about twenty hours on the water. Two nights is better; the second day is the quiet one.

Do we share the boat?

Yes, with the other cabins. The car to and from Hanoi is private. A whole private boat is possible and we can quote it.

What happens if the bay is closed?

Nothing sails. You move the date or take a refund of the unused boat portion under the operator’s terms, and we switch you to Ninh Binh if the dates cannot move.
