Mekong Delta

The one delta town worth a night

A million people, a riverfront promenade and the last genuinely working floating market in the delta — twenty minutes downstream and starting before dawn.

Orientation

Why Can Tho and not somewhere nearer

Every delta itinerary faces the same arithmetic. Cai Rang market is finished by eight in the morning; Saigon is three hours away. No day trip from the city can reach it while it is still a market, which is why the nearer stops at My Tho and Cai Be exist and why they feel like exhibitions. Sleeping in Can Tho solves it completely: the boat leaves the promenade at half past five and you are among the trading boats by six.

The town itself is unremarkable in a pleasant way — a river promenade, a covered market, a good night market and a lot of students. It is not why you come, and one evening of it is genuinely enjoyable.

Cai Rang

The morning on the water

Take a small boat rather than one of the two-deck tour barges: it costs about the same per party, it can turn into the narrow channels behind the market, and it does not arrive in a convoy. The market itself is wholesale — boats selling pineapples, sweet potatoes, watermelon to smaller boats that will resell them on land — and the pole at the bow of each boat carries a sample of whatever it is selling, which is the delta’s version of a shop sign.

After the market, the good hour is the small canals: Phong Dien, further upriver, is a smaller and almost entirely local market, and the channels between the two are narrow enough that the boat slows to walking pace under the palms. Most tours turn around at Cai Rang. Ask for the canals.

The rest of the day

What else fills a day

  • Binh Thuy old house — a 19th-century merchant house, genuinely atmospheric, twenty minutes from town.
  • A rice noodle workshop on the way back from the market — the real ones start at four in the morning and are still going at eight.
  • Cycling the orchard islands across the river, which is flat, shaded and the best two hours here if the heat allows.
  • The night market on Ninh Kieu — grilled river fish, snails, and prices about a third of Saigon.

Boats are arranged the evening before, not on the morning. If you arrive late and plan to sort it at six, you will end up on a barge.

Timing

When to come, and who should skip it

September to November puts the water high and the landscape at its best; December to April is dry and comfortable. The market runs every day of the year except the first days of Tet, when the delta closes almost completely.

Skip Can Tho if you are not prepared to be on a boat at half past five — the whole reason to be here evaporates otherwise, and Ben Tre or Vinh Long make a gentler overnight. Skip it also if you have only ten days in Vietnam; the delta is the first leg we cut on a short trip.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

What time does Cai Rang floating market start?

Trading starts before five and it is thinning out by eight. Leave the promenade at half past five to be there for the real thing.

Is one night in Can Tho enough?

Yes for the market and an evening. Two nights lets you add the orchard islands and Phong Dien market without a rushed morning.

Private boat or shared?

Private, and a small one. The price difference at two or three people is small and it is the difference between the canals and a convoy.

Can I fly into Can Tho?

Yes, from Hanoi, Phu Quoc and Da Nang. It is a useful way to start a delta-first trip without backtracking through Saigon.
