Northern Vietnam

The short trip to the mountains

Four hours from Hanoi, a valley of terraced rice, bamboo water wheels and Thai villages, with walking that suits people who do not want a serious trek.

Orientation

What Pu Luong is

A nature reserve in Thanh Hoa province, low enough to be warm and high enough to have terraces on every slope. The valley floor has bamboo water wheels that lift water into the fields — a working irrigation system rather than an ornament — and the villages are Thai stilt houses, many of which now take guests. There is very little to do beyond walking, cycling and swimming in the stream, which is the point.

It is the sensible answer for a traveller who wants northern mountain scenery but cannot spare the five and a half hours to Sapa or the five days for Ha Giang. Two nights, four hours from Hanoi, and it combines naturally with Ninh Binh on the way.

What to do

What to do

  • Walk between villages on the valley paths — two to four hours, gentle by northern standards, and you can turn back whenever you want.
  • Cycle the valley floor, which is flat and shaded in parts.
  • Kayak or float the Cham stream when the water is up.
  • Sit still. Most of the lodges here are built to look at the terraces, and doing nothing in one of them for an afternoon is a legitimate plan.
  • Market mornings at Pho Doan, on a five-day cycle rather than a weekly one — ask which days fall in your stay.

Timing

When the terraces look their best

Two windows: late May and June, when the fields are flooded and planted, and late September into October, when the rice turns gold before harvest. Outside those, the valley is green and pleasant rather than spectacular. July and August are hot and wet; December to February is cool, misty and quiet.

The harvest dates move by a fortnight from year to year and they are not the same in every valley here, because the fields are planted when the water arrives rather than on a calendar. If the gold terraces are the reason you are coming, tell us your dates and we will ask the lodges what the fields actually look like that week rather than quoting an average. In a year when it has come early, the better answer is often to move the stop a few days rather than arrive to stubble.

Not for everyone

Where it fits, and who should skip it

Pu Luong works best as a two-night stop between Hanoi and Ninh Binh, or as the mountain leg of a short northern trip. It does not replace Sapa or Ha Giang if dramatic landscape is what you are after — the scale here is gentler and the walking is easier.

Skip it if you have already planned Sapa or the far north, unless you specifically want a slow two nights in the middle of a busy itinerary. Skip it also if you need hotel-standard rooms; the good places here are lodges and homestays, comfortable but simple.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How far is Pu Luong from Hanoi?

About four hours by road, or two and a half from Ninh Binh, which is the natural way to combine them.

Is the walking hard?

Gentler than Sapa. Two to four hour valley walks with some climbing, on paths that are muddy after rain.

When are the terraces gold?

Late September into October. Flooded and planted terraces are late May and June.

Is it good for families?

Yes — short walks, a stream to swim in, and lodges with pools. The drive from Hanoi is the hardest part of it.
