Day trip from Saigon

Three hours on the water as the lights come on

The river is the part of Saigon most visitors only see from a bridge. This evening puts you on it at sunset, with dinner, as the towers on both banks light up.

Overview

The city from its river

The Saigon River bends around District 1 and the new towers of Thu Thiem, and it is at its best around sunset, when the light drops quickly and both banks light up at once. The boat is a dinner boat, a steady, slow craft with an open deck and a covered dining room; we reserve a table for our group and a guide sits with you.

It is a relaxed evening rather than a sightseeing tour, but there is plenty to see: the port, the old warehouses, the new bridges, fishing boats heading out, and the skyline behind them. Dinner is a set southern menu, with vegetarian options, served as the boat turns back towards the city.

How the evening runs

Day 1

Sunset and dinner on the Saigon River

The skyline lighting up on both banks at once

17:45 — pick-up from your hotel in District 1, 3 or Binh Thanh; a short drive to the pier in District 1. 18:00 — boarding. We take seats on the open deck for the first hour, which is the best time for photographs.

18:15 — the boat leaves as the sun goes down, heading downstream past the port and under the bridges. Your guide explains how the river shaped the city, from the French port to the new east bank.

19:15 — dinner in the dining room or on deck: fresh spring rolls, a salad of green mango or banana flower, grilled fish or prawns, a clay-pot dish, rice and fruit. Most evenings there is music on board, which is part of the atmosphere rather than a performance you need to watch.

20:30 — back at the pier. 21:15 — at your hotel, or dropped at a rooftop or café nearby if you want to stay out.

Practical

Weather, dress and what to expect on board

The river is breezy after dark and usually a few degrees cooler than the streets. In the wet season a shower may drive everyone inside for twenty minutes, and the dining room is covered. Smart casual is fine. Bring a light layer for the deck and insect repellent. The boat is stable and seasickness is rare on the river.

Busy evenings

Friday and Saturday evenings and public holidays are busier on the water. Weeknights are quieter and better for photographs from the deck.

Timing depends a little on the season. Sunset in Saigon moves only between about half past five and half past six through the year, so the boat always leaves in daylight and returns in the dark. From December to February the sky is usually clear and the colour lasts; in the wet months cloud can bring an early dusk, but the lights reflected on a wet river are their own reward.

Not for everyone

Who this does not suit

Travellers wanting a quiet, intimate boat for two should ask about a private boat, which costs more; this is a shared dinner boat with other guests and music. It is also not a food experience in the way the street-food evening is — the menu is good, but it is a set dinner rather than a tour of the city’s cooking. Families with toddlers may find three hours at a table long, even with the deck to walk on, and anyone who has already done a river boat in Ha Long or the delta should weigh whether an evening in the city itself would be the better use of their last night.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which boat do you use?

A dinner boat that sails from District 1, chosen for its food and deck space. We reserve a table for our party.

Is there a dress code?

No. Smart casual is typical; bring a light layer for the breeze.

Can I book a private boat?

Yes, at a higher price. It suits proposals, anniversaries and small groups who want the river to themselves.
